The
planet Gehrig was discovered in the year 3118 and was named after a
legendary player of an antique game. Its
name came about when a surveyor, who was a history buff, orbited the
planet and noticed that its single continent and single ocean were shaped
approximately like the coverings on an old-fashioned baseball.
He later researched the game and discovered that one of its heroes
had been a man named Lou Gehrig. The
surveyor proposed naming the planet Gehrig and the name stuck.
Gehrig,
however, was found to be a planet without exploitable resources and one
with violent and fearsome native wildlife.
It was thus ignored until 3750 when the Galactic Committee chose to
make it a prison planet: a dumping place for the worst of the worst.
Dave Welch was improperly convicted of a series of horrendous murders and
banished to the planet Gehrig. This
novel is the story of his life, his discoveries, and what he does with
them.
