In 2007 we
purchased a motor home and began a life of frequent travel in
retirement. We made a month-long trip to West Virginia in 2007 and
spent five months on the road in 2008 going to and
from Alaska. In 2009 we spent another five months traveling to
Missouri and then Maine and New England. Since then we've done the
Pacific Northwest, the Carolinas, California, most of the rest of the
USA (except Hawaii) and major parts of Canada. We've had a ball and we're sure others are looking
forward to doing the same thing. This series of books passes along what we
learned and communicates some of the fun we had.

I
traveled extensively when I was working but, like many road warriors,
never got to see anything but airports and conference rooms.
So after I retired, my wife and I bought a motor home and began a
series of extensive trips.
In total, over more than eleven years, we traveled for 1,410 days
in forty-nine states and five Canadian provinces, drove 71,540 miles in
the RV and 41,437 more in our tow car, stayed at 484 different
campgrounds, and saw 1,122 different attractions. I
have written annual travelogues about our individual trips; this book
summarizes and lists the highlights from all of them: unusual and
interesting roads, campgrounds that stood out from the rest, towns that we
thoroughly enjoyed, places where we ate unforgettable meals, tourist
attractions that stood out from the crowd, national parks that we would
(and sometimes did) visit multiple times, and other places worth
remembering.
Several on-the-road incidents are also recounted giving flavor to
the stew. The book includes one hundred twenty-four full-color
photos.

My
wife and I had long dreamed of traveling to Alaska. I retired in 2006, we
purchased a motor home in 2007, and in 2008 we made our dream come true.
You can too! This book recounts our 5-month long, 8,700-mile trip from
Milwaukee to Fairbanks and back in day-by-day detail.
It
tells of the amazing sights we saw and the surprises we found, both
positive and negative. It includes several humorous tales of the road and
describes some mistakes we made and things we wish we had done better. It
is, in summary, the book I wish I had been able to read before we left
home.
The
book provides maps that show where we went and includes over 230 full
color photographs of our journey. It discusses the preparations we made
and discloses not only our budget for the trip, but the amounts we
actually spent and what we spent them on. And at the back, it lists the
places we went and the campgrounds we used together with available addresses, phone
numbers, websites and geo coordinates.

never got to see anything but airports and conference rooms.
So, after I retired, my wife and I bought a motor home and began a
series of extensive trips.
This
book recounts our 2009 travels: a short one-month trip through central
Missouri and a much longer trip through New York and New England and then
down the east coast to Washington DC, with special emphasis on Maine.
It tells of the sights we saw and the surprises we found, both
positive and negative. It includes several humorous tales of the road and
describes some mistakes we made and things we wish we had done
better.
The
book provides maps that show where we went and includes over 160 full
color photographs of our journey. It discusses the preparations we made
and discloses not only our budget for the trip, but the amounts we

This
book recounts our 2012 travels through the central USA to Colorado, Utah,
Nevada and Oregon on our way to and from California.
We visited numerous federal parks including Mesa Verde, Arches, Bryce,
Zion, Sequoia, Yosemite and others. We also saw the
California State Capitol, the Golden Gate Bridge, and several major
railroad and auto museums. We drove US 50 -- the loneliest road in
America -- across the Nevada desert, drove the Schafer Trail in
Canyonlands National Park, and drove through Phantom Canyon, south of
Victor, Colorado. The book recounts all of this and more,
illustrated with almost a hundred-fifty full color photos and with maps
that show where we went. It features an appendix
listing available addresses, phone numbers, web sites and geo coordinates
for our stops.

In
2013 we made two trips: first to New Orleans, along the Gulf Coast to Key
West and then up the Florida coast to Jacksonville, and second through
Michigan to Pennsylvania and back. We saw and did many things
including gorgeous beaches, plantation homes, Disney World (of course),
both the Stennis and Kennedy space centers, Castillo de San Marcos and
lots more. The Michigan trip included some back woods travel in the
Upper Peninsula, Mackinac Island, and the Ford Museum / Greenfield
Village. The book recounts all of this and more,
illustrated with over a hundred full color photos and with maps
that show where we went. It features an appendix
listing available addresses, phone numbers, web sites and geo coordinates
for our stops. As a special bonus, a chapter lists and describes our
all-time favorite campgrounds.

In
2014 we headed south again, but this time southwest passing through
Arkansas on the way to Texas. From Texarkana we continued south all
the way to Brownville passing through Waco and San Antonio.
Returning north, we followed the coast through Corpus Christi to Galveston
and then inland through Houston and Dallas into Oklahoma. In
Oklahoma we visited Oklahoma City, Enid, Tulsa and other places before
going into northwest Arkansas where we stopped at Eureka Springs before
moving on to Branson, Missouri. Highlights of the trip included the
Alamo and the Riverwalk in San Antonio, three state capitol buildings and
three Presidential museums, both North and South Padre Island and lots
more. The book includes more than eighty full color photos and a map
that shows our route. It also features an appendix listing all our
stops including both campgrounds and attractions.

In
2015 we went east on a large-city tour that covered Washington DC, New
York City, Ottawa, Toronto and many places in between.
Big-city campgrounds can be hard to find, but we succeeded
and managed to deal with the traffic and with public transportation.
Highlights of this trip included the US Capitol, the Smithsonian,
the Jefferson Memorial and other sights in Washington; Times Square, the
9/11 Memorial, Fifth Avenue and more in New York, the Canadian Capitol in
Ottawa, the CN Tower in Toronto, several interesting sights in Niagara
Falls, and more in Detroit and through southern Michigan.
The book includes ninety full color photos and a map that shows our
route. It also features an
appendix listing all our stops including both campgrounds and attractions.

The
desert southwest can be hot and uncomfortable so we traveled south in the
spring and moved north as summer approached. Some
of the amazing sights we saw included Carlsbad Caverns, the Very Large
Array (a radio telescope twenty-odd miles wide), Canyon de Chelly National
Park, Yosemite, Mount Rushmore and dozens of less famous places.
Our visits to these sites are recounted in the book together with a
detailed listing of more than fifty other attractions we visited and the
forty-one campsites where we stayed. The book includes ninety-four full
color photos and a map that shows our route.

This
book recounts our 2017 travels from Wisconsin east through Virginia across
the Great Plains to the Canadian Rockies and Banff. Our
relatively unusual and lengthy trip was occasioned by our
fiftieth wedding anniversary and a desire to celebrate it in Wisconsin,
the fact that we had not previously toured Virginia, and the fact that we
had missed Banff in 2008 when we had traveled to Alaska.
Some
of the gorgeous and delightful things we saw included Virginia's Natural
Bridge, Colonial Williamsburg, Luray Caverns, Theodore Roosevelt National
Park, Glacier National Park and the Canadian national parks near the town
of Banff. Our visits to these sites and dozens of others are recounted in the book together with a
detailed listing of more than sixty attractions we visited and the
forty-five campsites where we stayed. The book includes seventy full
color photos and a map that shows our route.
